4 Ways to Prepare Yourself to be a Pet Owner
Making the decision to own a pet is one of the most selfless acts you can perform. Bringing a pet home will prove to be a sacrifice of time, energy and resources. However, the love you will receive in return from that pet is priceless. As with anything, you want to ensure that your pet has everything it will need in order to transition into your home life. Before you bring your furry friend home, here are a few pointers you may want to implement to make sure owning your pet goes off without a hitch.
Prepare your home
The first task you will need to handle is making sure your home is pet-friendly. You will need to assign a designated area for your pet bed, toys and food and water bowls. Then, take some time to dog proof the rooms in your house where your new furry family member will be allowed to go. Keep your floor clear of any plugs or small items that could be potentially hazardous to your animal. If for the first week or so, your pet seems a little timid or standoffish, do not be discouraged, as he is simply adjusting to the change in environment. In this phase be sure to nurture him with lots of love and affection, and he will surely warm up to you.
Seek out a veterinarian
This will prove to be one of the most important steps on your journey to pet ownership. Be sure to find a veterinarian that you feel comfortable entrusting with your new found companion. Your vet will be responsible for administering vaccinations, minor grooming and the wellbeing of your animal should a decline in health occur. Choose a vet that you feel like you can communicate well with, as you and he will be making a lot of decisions together on behalf of your pet. Also be sure that his practices and equipment are up to date. Finding a vet should not be hard, however if you are running into difficulties, consider asking your friends who own pets who they recommend.
Make time for your pet
You will come to notice that pets thrive off of attention from their owners. If you do not carve out enough quality time for your pet they can become sad and inactive, much like their human counterparts. If your pet of choice is a dog, you want to be sure to spend plenty of time outdoors with it, taking him for walks and playing frisbee or catch. If you have a cat, be sure to show him lots of affection as well! No pet likes to be cooped up all day away from it’s owner, so please keep the factor of time spent in your mind.
Be sure to socialize
Socializing from a pet owner’s standpoint means to get your animal around other people and their pets. Some pets become skittish or overstimulated if they are not used to being around others. In order to avoid this behavior you must get your pet around people and other animals as soon as possible. The first few times may not go as planned, however repetition is key. The more often you socialize your pet with others, the quicker they will adapt.
Use these four steps to guide you in the right direction as you become a pet owner. Be sure to load your pet with an overabundance of unconditional love, and they will do the same for you! The addition of a pet to your home will prove to be a very fulfilling experience that will give you memories to sustain a lifetime, enjoy your newfound furry companion!
